A way of life, bordering the wild
The Forest Retreat sits on the edge of Sinharaja, Sri Lanka's last stretch of primary rainforest — three cabanas built to let the jungle stay the main event, not the backdrop.
Why we built this
Himagiriya Estate has been part of Deniyaya's landscape long before it was a retreat — tea country giving way to jungle at the edge of the Sinharaja biosphere. We built The Forest Retreat to share that exact edge: close enough to the reserve to hear it at night, quiet enough that you notice.
Every cabana was raised by hand from local timber, spaced apart so each stay feels like it belongs to one family at a time, not a row of rooms. We keep it small on purpose — three cabanas, never more — because the forest is the reason you're here, and it doesn't need company to compete with.
What we hold onto
Guided by locals
Our trekking and birdwatching guides grew up on the edge of Sinharaja — they read the forest the way others read a map.
Small by design
Three cabanas, never more. Space, quiet, and a guest list short enough that we know your name by day two.
Rooted in place
Local timber, local produce, local knowledge. What you eat, sleep in, and learn here all comes from Deniyaya itself.
If Sinharaja is calling, we'd love to host you. Reach out and we'll help you plan the stay, the transfers, and everything in between.
